Experience and/or specialized skills are useful but not
required. We may provide training. Sapna, a Hearts & Minds volunteer, enjoying gaining experience while helping us help millions of people Develop a Wide Range of Skills: Get involved in your choice of hands-on work. Gain valuable experience in areas such as marketing and communications, nonprofit and business management, public service, volunteer recruitment, grassroots organizing and advocacy, research, accounting, finance, law, computer science, Internet, graphic design, website design and development, art, arts management, photography, publicity, fundraising, creative writing, journalism, editing and more. Work at our Manhattan location in New York City or from anywhere in the world. Currently, Hearts & Minds is an all-volunteer organization. Some expenses may be covered. There are other ways we help our volunteers and interns. We do not provide housing, but here is some helpful advice. Activities: There's a wide range of activities to choose from in our Working Groups.
Internships and Co-Ops: Internships total at least 250 hours. Extended internships total at least 400 hours. Both of these are within one year. Advanced internships of 700 hours and Co-ops of 1,000 hours are also available. These can take up to two years to complete. We also offer Leadership Opportunities for more ambitious individuals. Other volunteers have no minimum total hours. Students may also fulfill community service or internship requirements and gain valuable experience. Course credit and independent study are possible. Court-Required Community Service: more info Volunteers under age 18 must provide working papers, readily available from their schools. A parent or legal guardian must co-sign our Volunteer policies. Hearts & Minds works with volunteers age 14 or older.
Location: We are in the very interesting, pleasant Morningside Heights neighborhood in New York City, but you can volunteer from anywhere in the world, including these projects. When: Volunteer
three or more hours/week, scheduled at flexible times that are
convenient for you. You can start any time. There's no minimum total
hours for regular volunteers. Getting started: A resume and cover letter are appreciated, though not required. If you have it, please fax or e-mail it to us. You can also contact us by phone. We recommend that you attend one of our info sessions at our office before volunteering. They last about an hour. You don't have to dress up, jeans are fine. Everyone who volunteers at our office is required to sign our Volunteer and Intern Introduction and Agreement before working with us. This is usually done during the info session, so you have a chance to ask questions.
