"A fellowship of men and women who share their
experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their
common problem and help others to recover from a gambling problem."
Gives plenty of information. It
is filled with questionnaires, and programs that will help the quitting
process. -PT
This site gives you a list of centers around the
United States with just a click. Also gives you a detailed explanation of its recovery program and a questionnaire
to see if you have a problem with gambling. -OCC
The history of this organization is truly
inspirational and much of it can lend itself to the founders who decided to
discuss their gambling issue. The site lists many meeting sites around the
United States, enabling anyone to receive guidance. -SHK

"...provides an overview on the issue of
compulsive gambling. Includes information on how to
receive free treatment for gambling addiction at the New York State
Psychiatric Institute. There is also a self assessment that helps determine
the severity of one's gambling problem."
It seems a
well-established site. Navigation is simple and there isn't much content to
overwhelm or befuddle the user. Since free treatment is provided, this site
is well worth the visit. Users can also call a helpline if they are unable
to attend the clinic. -SHK

It's not a good idea to leave life up to chance.
You can choose your destiny wisely.
Gam-Anon

"...is a life saving instrument for the spouse, family or
close friends of compulsive gamblers.
We come into the group feeling alone,
frightened, helpless, desperate and ashamed. We hesitated to share problems
and failures, fearing none could understand. The Gam-Anon group is warmly
accepting and it offers the new member identification. The message we
receive is: "Come join with us, we too were alone, afraid and unable to cope
with the problem; we will share with you a new and fulfilling way of life".
Gam-Anon's purposes are three-fold: To learn acceptance and understanding of
the gambling illness; to use the program and its problem solving suggestions
as aids in rebuilding our lives and, upon our own recovery, to give
assistance to those who suffer."
This site is very simple. It
contains quizzes about gambling and basic information. It also gives a
meeting schedule as well as a suggested reading list to learn more.
-OCC
This site is similarly structured to
Gambler's Anonymous. The only real difference is in the fact that the
services are intended towards people who are affiliated with compulsive
gamblers (family, friends, etc.). Since many addicts shy away from
treatment, this site is very useful. -SHK
Getting Past Gambling
Website:
www.gettingpastgambling.com
"...is a essentially
a community where people come to share experiences while providing moral
support for others. The homepage provides daily or weekly anecdotes, poems,
words of encouragement, etc. There is also a forum and message board where
people can communicate with others who are involved in the fight against
addiction."
Unlike many other internet sites,
this site provides sentimental support for gambling addicts who may steer
away from the conventional internet site that provides the usual array of
information and little support. The daily entries that users provide are
very useful and provide much sentimental support and advice. -SHK

traditionally under-served populations. We will accomplish this by
presenting state of the art science based information on topics such as
program design, pharmacological treatment, cognitive and
cognitive-behavioral treatments, psychiatric co-morbidity, substance abuse,
and others."
This site gives a lot of very informative and helpful
information. It has information about books, videos and articles to buy. The
site gives you links on how to get help if you have a problem. There is also
a training program and workshops. -OCC
This site is useful for those who are
interested in the study of the prevention and treatment of problem gambling.
The only form of help and assistance is in the links that the site provides.

"... has a strong commitment to promote responsible gambling
through education, prevention, counseling services and research."
This page has a very fun feeling. It gives a lot of
basic information about gambling, the odds and more. The site gives you
statistics, myths and superstitions. It also gives information about how to
get help if you are a problem gambler. -OCC
Probably the only problem gambling site
that takes advantage of Internet technology to create an entertaining and
visually appealing webpage. Aside from the visuals, this site still gives
users the gist of problem gambling and provides help.

"...exclusively funds
research that helps increase understanding of pathological and youth
gambling while formulating methods of treatment for disorder or addiction.
As a national organization, it is also an affiliated charity for the
American Gaming Association (AGA)."
One of the most important features for
an organization is its credibility, which this organization possesses. In
2000, the Harvard Medical School established the Institute for
Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders through a contract
that was awarded by this organization. The site is well organized and is
also a reliable resource for information and consultation; it offers
conferences, publications, etc. -SHK
It is linked with the gambling industry, so
some people might want to be skeptical. The site might have very helpful
info though. -BAB

awareness of pathological gambling, ensure the widespread availability of
treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research
and programs for prevention and education...The National Council administers
several nationwide programs, including a 24-hour confidential helpline, a
gambling-specific certification program for treatment professionals, and
sponsors the Journal of Gambling Studies, the only academic journal in the
world devoted to problem gambling research."
This site has links to states'
local chapters and affiliates, where you can get information about local
help. The main site, however, also offers a counselor search through states,
where you can find a person equipped to handle your situation in your area.
This site has more info on person-to-person help than basic information. -
TAL
This site also has
information about treatment facilities. It gives some general information,
such as FAQ sheets, self-tests, and really inspiring stories. It also gives
info about upcoming events and a suggested reading list. -OCC
Essentially, this is a typical treatment
that provides the usual services. However, it is very reliable because of
its name and status. One would not have to worry about the validity and
credibility of the organization. -SHK

"...provides a free gambling site blocker that helps compulsive online gamblers
to reduce or even quit online gambling. There is also a forum that provides
users an arena for discussion."
This site has little to offer when
compared to other sites. However, the free gambling site blocker is a very
useful tool for any addict. What would normally cost a fair sum of money now
costs nothing. Furthermore, the site also provides links to other resources
that users can explore. -SHK

Here's possibly your best deal: Starting today,
you can gain the upper hand on this royal problem and flush it straight out
of your life.

"is a site that is
dedicated to helping individuals quit online gambling. With widespread
gambling through the Internet, this site offers a self-exclusion program
that helps filter users' connections thus preventing users from accessing
online gambling sites. Additionally, there is a short questionnaire that
measures the severity of addiction."
Unfortunately, one must pay for the
service that is provided by this site. However, it can be well worth the
price if online gambling is curtailed. It is not a particularly well known
site but is one that can be extremely helpful. There is also a forum that
users can use to discuss their gambling disorders. -SHK

"is a nonprofit organization that is
committed to gambling problem prevention. Though many of the services and
intervention programs that the site provides are exclusively intended for
Canadian residents, the site still provides numerous resources and vital
information on the problematic issue of gambling. Furthermore, there is even
an online library that can be an extremely useful resource for people who
want more information on the topic. Great audio and video resources are also
provided at a cost."
Though this may be a Canada-based
organization, the services and resources they provide to anyone with
Internet access are very valuable. One must take advantage of the online
library to fully enjoy the benefits of this website. However, one can also
take advantage of outside resources that the site provides. -SHK

and share experiences with each other. There are separate rooms for
family/friends and victims. Donations are also accepted via credit card for
the fight against gambling addiction."
This site is very inspirational in
not only its mission and purpose but even in its overall aesthetic design.
Unlike the majority of internet message boards, the message boards on this
site are constantly updated, even on an hourly basis at times. This is an
excellent provider of moral and emotional support. -SHK

"Created by a problem gambler in the UK,
Jake Brindell, this site was created on the experiences and accomplishments
of this individual. He offers a free self-help guide that is extensive and
reflects his previous struggle with compulsive gambling. Additionally, he
sells his other written work in a package at a fair price. Donations are
also accepted to further improve the website."
Since this site was created by a previous
problem gambler, one can relate to the life story that this man shares. His
tips on curbing compulsive gambling are very useful since he also provides
links. The self-help guide provides an interesting perspective on dealing
with compulsive gambling. This site is highly recommended. -SHK

If an individual in his/her youth is
struggling with a gambling addiction or disorder, this site would be very
helpful. There is a helpful section in the site that is dedicated to an
overview of youth gambling. Furthermore, this organization has also
established an online hotline for victims of gambling addiction/disorder. -SHK
