We need clean water to end poverty!

We can't live without water but 884 million people do not have access to clean sources. Almost 1.6 billion people face economic water scarcity. Unsafe sources lead to disease and death.

In areas where water is scarce, women and children must walk hours each day to reach a good source. This prevents them from working or attending school and continues a vicious cycle of poverty.

A bill already in Congress can get water to those who need it most. You can help by supporting this bill.

Access to clean water is one of the most basic ways to help end extreme poverty worldwide.

The cost
We can’t live without water, yet 884 million people lack access to safe water. A child dies from a water related disease every 20 seconds. Polluted water kills more children than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and measles combined.

Ensuring that developing countries have clean water also gives children the chance to go to school by ending long, daily treks to get clean water supplies. They will grow up better able to secure jobs and provide for their families. Thus, global access to water is one of the best steps to help end poverty.

What you can do
You can support this life-saving bill. It is in the House Foreign Affairs Committee as the Global Water Access and Equity Act, H.R. 80, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as the 2011 Water for the World Act, S. 641. Please co-sponsor this bill and actively work for its passage.

This bill expands upon the 2005 Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act. It also aims to establish a Bureau for Global Water Aid within the United States Agency for International Development. Additionally, it calls for the monitoring of our nation’s policies concerning global water access.

This legislation can improve health, education, and financial stability worldwide. Please let me know when and how you are actively supporting these urgent reforms.
