How to List Your Organization on Our Website

Dear Organization,

We may list your organization on our website. Please first check whether we already list your group:

Search our site:

We generally list groups that tackle important social or self-help issues and who work in at least one of these areas:

  • locally in New York City
  • nationwide in the USA
  • in many nations

If you feel your organization addresses an important issue that we don't yet have, please let us know. We'll consider adding a web page for the issue.

Please include a link to the web page in our site where you think we could list you.

You may also want to contact these other, non-affiliated volunteer referral organizations that may also list you.

If you think you match our criteria, contact us at mail@change.net. If you're not sure whether we'll list you, it's OK to write a short mail asking us about that before you prepare the entire listing. When ready, you can send us your listing ready-to-go, using HTML formatting in the format explained below. 

We would also appreciate your adding a link to our website to a frequently visited web page in your website.

Name: Helpful Organization full name and then (initials in parenthesis if it also goes by them. Initials should not be bold type. Same size as rest of type, and exact same blue as in subhead in the template - 0.htm)
Address including street & suite # (if any) on same line, next line is city, state (or province), postal code. Also add the country if outside the USA, if it is not part of a one-country website, such as Italy in www.change.net/ital) Zip code should always be on the same line as the state.  Only the first 5 digits for USA zip codes.
Phone add the number "1" before every USA area code, for example: 1-212-280-0333 (if there are two main phone #s, place them both on one line with a non-bold "or" in between)
Fax:
1-212-280-0336 (this is optional, listed in regular type, not bold, and on its own line, to avoid confusion with the phone number)
E-mail: We are especially interested in the main e-mail address it provides in its website. "E-mail" is always hyphenated.
Website address: www.change.net (no need for http://)
What it's about:
In quotes, "the most important 1-4 sentences that describe what your organization and its website are about." Here are some additional guidelines for this section of your listing:
  • You can delete most mentions of your group's name, since that's evident from the listing title.
  • The shorter the summary is, the better it is, as long as it includes the most important information.
  • We may do some editing of what you say, if there's a shorter way to say it. We try to be careful not to change the overall meaning of what you're saying.
  • Complete sentences are not necessary, as long as it's clear and reads nicely. You may delete the subject of the sentence as long as it makes sense without it. If it reads very smoothly in complete sentences, that is fine, too.
  • Not necessary to list names of board members, founders, editors or other staff, unless there is a good reason why that is noteworthy. (Founding date is interesting, though.)
  • You can briefly describe what activities your volunteers can do.
  • You don't need to use bullet points in the actual description.

We may add additional comments: In 1-4 sentences, we include a summary review of what we like about the site and what could be better. The main focus is on  how useful the site is, but it's also nice to include a short critique on the design and navigation of the site. For example, we may write whether it has an easy to use search feature to find a wide range of information.

        Covers effective organizations and individuals, where and how to volunteer effectively, and self-help resources for a wide range of psychological and physical challenges. Also includes Inspiring Quotes, Food & Health, Art and Humor.
       This all-volunteer organization is definitely not slick. Site design could be more attractive. They are working on that.

       Note that the listings are justified right and that the text just automatically wraps to additional lines. Since different computers show the text as different sizes, DO NOT try to set each individual line.

More tips:

  • If a website is offering something unusual, specify if it is free or not.

  • Your summary shouldn't be too vague or too specific.

  • If they are available, it is helpful to list other organizations that the website works directly with.

  • Make sure your listing follows Style Sheet for Our Website

FYI, here's additional criteria we use to decide whether to list an organization:

  • Summarizing the issue(s), educating and moving people to action
  • Describing people and organizations that effectively tackle challenges in our communities and society
  • Providing an easy-to-use and useful website. For example, with valuable, interesting services or volunteering activities that are readily accessible for people in NYC, nationwide, and/or all over the world.
  • Including insightful, thought-provoking ideas
  • Listing valuable links to other websites

As long as they meet such criteria, it is OK to list sites that:

  • Cover many other issues, as long as there's substantial relevant information for the issue you're working on. If there is a specific section of the site for your issue, you can describe and link directly to it, just mentioning briefly the overall work of the organization.
  • Have a "bias" (specific platform), as long as they clearly advocate non-violence.
  • Are written/created  by individuals, if they seem to be honest, clear, and knowledgeable (such as a professor).

However, we do not usually include commercial websites - those that advertise a service or product - unless the product is exceptionally helpful or the website has very useful info that does not require using their product.
