Promoting Volunteerism
Ideas for promoting volunteerism in Japan, the United States and all over the world

Written by a Japanese journalist and college professor who works to promote volunteerism in Japan.

There are many ways we can encourage more people to volunteer, and help to ensure that their volunteering is more effective and fulfilling:

  • inspire people to realize how much their volunteering makes a difference, that they can gain, too, from their volunteering experiences
  • communicate successes that other volunteers have achieved
  • work with businesses to encourage their employees to volunteer
  • work with schools to cultivate a new generation of volunteers with safe, fulfilling and valuable experiences for their students in surrounding communities
  • provide resources for organizations to accept more volunteers and provide information and training for them to work more effectively with them
  • encourage governments to provide tax incentives for citizens in all income brackets to support nonprofit organizations
  • start and support organizations that inform and refer volunteers
  • build a sense of community that includes other ethnic and economic groups
  • encourage and offer effective activities for the volunteers in areas that address serious problems
  • encourage people to take initiatives to find and create the best alternatives
