The Power of Diversity:
Acknowledging Our Differences |
When we respect those who are different, we
are better able to live and work together.
This is logical, but surely not automatic. For
centuries, people have used bigotry to gain power over others. Progress has been made in
some areas, but this problem is still very much alive. Phrases such as, "your skin is too
light," "your skin is too dark," "your religious beliefs are
strange," and "if its not white, its not right," are the types
of degrading words fueled by ignorant people.
Intolerance comes from what we are taught or from
bad experiences with a few individuals of a group. When were prejudiced, we
generalize to the entire group. The truth is that every group contains all kinds of individuals.
If employers are prejudiced, they may not hire the
most qualified people. This does not benefit their company or society. Discrimination in the
workplace and unequal access to quality education help explain the differing incomes of
various racial and ethnic groups. Many poor people, disproportionately minorities, have to
work two or three jobs just to make ends meet.
Everyone will gain only when every individual has equal
opportunities to advance himself or herself and his or her family, realize
his or her full potential and,
therefore, contribute more to society.
Combating Intolerance
Parents can teach children tolerance from an early age. Both children and adults can
enjoy cultural activities with diverse groups to learn about different customs and each
other. One program found in Columbus, Ohio is called The Positive Youth Foundation.
Created by youth for youth, it sponsors activism, music and cultural interest while
improving awareness of sexism, race, poverty and more. Challenge Day is a nonprofit
organization that holds national workshops and special programs to teach youth and young
adults compassion, leadership, and respect. Other community
programs also encourage growth and taking responsibility. Our Racism Link lists many organizations working
nationwide.
America has always been a nation of immigrants. Each
group makes valuable contributions. When we work together in peace and understanding,
everyone gains. You can do your part by learning about others, fighting prejudice and
encouraging tolerance.
Diversity on the Rise in the
U.S.A.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there has
been a rise in foreign-born people living in the U.S. Between 1990 and 2000, this grew
from 34 million to 56 million. The Hispanic and Asian communities will triple in number by
2050: Hispanics will increase by 194%, Asians by 213%, Blacks by 71%. The White
population, the largest in the country, is expected to decline from 69% to 50%. |
