What turns me on about advertising
by John Follis
President/Creative Director
Follis Advertising, Inc.

As a creative person, I'll always be turned on by the creative process of advertising -- conceiving fresh, engaging, memorable ads. The ads my agency creates are like my kids. They are an extention of me. I want to be proud to show them off and to be recognized by my peers for setting high creative standards.

As a business person I get turned on by knowing that the public responds to the advertising, ultimately resulting in increased sales for my clients. What is also exciting to know is that by helping my clients grow and prosper, my business will do the same.

One thing I really enjoy about being in advertising is doing public service work. Advertising guru Bill Bernbach once said,

The advertising people in this country are the most skilled communicators. It would be a major step toward solving human problems if we could use our skills to persuade people everywhere to value one another. Imagine the difference it would make.

It's a great thought which I've applied throughout my career by contributing hundreds of hours to more than a dozen public service causes. I'd probably devote myself full-time to this if I didn't have to be concerned about making money.

Like many people, I also get turned on by money, power, and recognition. But unlike many people, I consider these things to be prerequisites rather than goals. My goal is to be as effective as possible in the public service arena. I believe that the more business success I achieve, the more effective I can be at accomplishing this goal.

Since any real success is the result of a collaborative effort, my dream is to work with a team of dedicated, talented professionals whose skills and ambitions compliment mine for the sake of a common goal.
